The United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment Statistics (“OES”) defines the skills and requirements of nursing assistant (31-1014) to “provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Perform duties such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, or move patients, or change linens. May transfer or transport patients. Includes nursing care attendants, nursing aides, and nursing attendants. The most recent OES data for nursing assistants can be found at http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes311014.htm.
Nursing assistants provide the large majority of the hours of care per resident per day which is required by the Commonwealth. Yet, nursing assistant turnover rates are high nationally– reportedly between 50% – 100% (Castle, N.G. and Engber, J., 2005, “Staff Turnover and Quality in Nursing Homes,” Medical Care, 43, 616-626). Pennsylvania fares no better in this regard than the nation as a whole. According to Pennsylvania’s Department of Labor and Industry, Western Pennsylvania counties of Allegheny and Westmoreland rank “very high” in job openings for nursing assistants (PA Workstats- March 2015).
Other Senior Care Careers:
In addition to nursing assistant, senior care facilities require the services of personal care aides, dietary aides, housekeepers, laundry and maintenance workers. Arriba will provide the training for these entry level positions, with training enhanced by vocational ESL classes.
